Bedding Brake Pads

This is one process you can use when you are braking in or bedding your break pads. It is a commonly regarded process to get the most out of your brakes and ensure they are fit for purpose.

Once you have secured your brakes in place and done the relevant safety checks, you can begin.

Gentle Braking

Start off bringing your car to around 30 mph then gently reduce speed to 15 mph. Give the brakes between 20-30 seconds to cool to avoid overheating.  Repeat this process 10 times.

Moderate Braking

Start off bringing your car to around 45 mph then moderately reduce speed to 30 mph. Give the brakes between 20-30 seconds to cool to avoid overheating.  Repeat this process 10 times.

Hard Braking 

Start off bringing your car to around 60 mph then reduce speed hard to 25 mph. Give the brakes between 20-30 seconds to cool to avoid overheating.  Repeat this process 10 times.

Any Concerns

If at any point during the process you have any cause for concern take the car to a professional for some expert advise. In some cases there can be some fade during hard stops it could be a sign of some overheating. Once cool give the hard braking phase another go.

Post Bedding

After that is done drive at a reasonable cruising speed using the brakes as infrequently as possible to allow the heat to escape. When making stops try not to use the foot brake and engage the hand brake for stability. Finally park the car and let the brakes to cool naturally.
