Tyres are a very important part of the handling of your vehicle. Did you know that if your tyre is worn below the legal limit or excessively damaged you can be given three points on your license for each tyre? If all four tyres are below the legal limit, that’s an instant driving ban. Tyres can not only cost you points on your license but can also be one of the main causes of accidents on the roads today.

If your car tyres are below the minimum tread required by law then it will have an effect on your stopping distance and makes it more likely for you to have a blowout which could be disastrous.

The legal limit for tyre depths in the UK is 1.6 mm around the centre covering at least three-quarters of the tread around the complete circumference of the tyre. You may find that your garage advises you to change your tyres when they get close to 2mm of 3mm as after this the effect it has on the safety of the car starts to be seen.

If you buy new tyres are usually sold with 8mm of tread whereas part worn tyres can be bought from many garages in the UK but may only have as little as  2mm of tread left. This is not always very economical as you may need to change them very soon after replacing them.
